Article Title: Maintaining Good Mental Health While Working Remotely

Author: Linda Gravett, Ph.D., SHRM-SCP, CEQCDr. Linda Gravett photo

As an industrial psychologist, I’ve been asked often during this past two months about ways to stay focused and mentally healthy while sheltering and working in place.  Here are some suggestions that I hope will be useful:

  •  Create a routine with a schedule; i.e., get up at a certain time; get dressed; have a plan for your day.
  • Set priorities and focus on essential activities.
  • Include breaks; don’t overschedule your time.
  • Take advantage of any technology training your company offers.
  • Don’t overload on the news.  Watch a 30-minute update twice a day, for example.
  • If you’re an extrovert, use social media and phone calls to make connections you need.
  • If you’re an introvert, talk with family members about the alone time you need to recharge.
  • Stay hydrated.  Get some exercise daily.  Avoid too much alcohol or sugar.
  • Take advantage of YouTube’s free yoga and meditation videos.
